Minimum Qualifications

You must be at least 21 years of age and no more than 39 years of age prior to enlistment, and possess a high school diploma or GED. You must have a valid driver's license for two years prior to making application. Applicants may test at the age of 20 with the understanding that they will be 21 prior to the enlisted date.

Salary and Benefits

Cadet monthly salary during training is $2832.83 per month. Upon graduation from the WV State Police Academy monthly salary as a WV State Trooper is $3438.17 per month. Competitive benefits package including life and health insurance, retirement, paid holidays, paid vacations, veterans’ incentive and more.

Vacation and sick leave are accrued each month. Troopers participate in the State health insurance program and are covered by the Troopers retirement Plan B. Time and one-half is earned for hours worked over 40 each week and special overtime is available through a variety of programs. Uniforms, ordinance and other equipment are provided.

Other Information for Applicants

Applicants should properly complete the application for West Virginia State Trooper and mail or deliver it to the personnel section. Once testing dates are announced, the applicant should bring a completed Application for West Virginia State Trooper (except if application is already on file), valid photo ID, running shoes, and appropriate exercise attire.

You will be required to pass a physical ability test prior to being eligible to take a fourteen-minute written test. A suitability test will be administered on this same day to applicants who successfully pass both the physical ability and written tests. Please review the links above "Physical Fitness Standards," and "State Trooper Exam Sample Questions," for more information. The suitability test consists of some reading, writing and mathematical skill abilities as well as the completion of personal and life history information. There is no study guide available for this test. Applicants advancing to the suitability test can plan to stay all afternoon and lunch will be provided. No enlistments will be made at this time and applicants may make plans to return to their home immediately following testing.

Directions to the Academy

The West Virginia State Police Academy located about 10 minutes west of Charleston, WV, near Institute, along Interstate 64. Take the Academy/Route 25 exit, proceed east on Route 25, approximately ¾ of a mile turn left on Academy Drive, then turn right at the top of the hill. The physical address is 135 Academy Drive, Dunbar, WV 25064.
